Car Insurance Coverages

Loan/Lease Coverage (also known as Gap Insurance)
If you have a loan on your car or you have leased your car, you must have Collision & Comprehensive coverage. If that car is stolen or declared a total, your insurance company will pay the actual cash value of the car. The actual cash value can be a lot lower than what you owe on your loan or lease amount. Your lender or lease company will hold you responsible for paying the difference between the actual cash value and the amount left on the loan or lease. Loan/Lease Coverage/Gap Insurance is offered by most insurance companies. Cost will vary by insurer, but average around $25 - $50 per vehicle.

Accident Forgiveness
  • May be offered as part of an additional endorsement - or coverage option - for an additional cost.
  • Costs vary by insurer.
  • The insurance company does not erase the accident from your driving record. Instead, the insurer only agrees to not include an accident in the calculation of future premiums.
Renting a Car
When renting a car, how do you know if you need the Collision Damage Waiver?

Although most collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW) fees are considered outrageous, most consumers should consider purchasing the CDW/LDW for short-term rentals. Why?

Because rental car companies are charging ever-higher fees and penalties for losses and expenses not covered by most auto policies or credit cards. For a more detailed explanation, read this article: Top 10 Reasons to Purchase the Rental Car Damage Waiver

Teen Drivers

Are you getting your driver's license soon? The privilege of driving is costly. Use the following information to convince your parents that you are an incredibly responsible young adult!
  • Take two Driver's Ed Classes. The "regular" one will save you about $250 a year for the first 3 years. The In Control Family Foundation class will save you 5% every year on your car insurance.
  • Which car will you be allowed to drive? The number of cars and drivers in your family has a big impact on your insurance premium. If you are an "occasional operator" on your family's car, the cost to add you is between $1200 and $1500 a year. If you are the "principal operator" of a family car or your own car, the cost to put it on the road with minimum coverage is about $2000 a year. If there is a loan on that car, the cost jumps to over $2500 a year! A car without a car loan is a wise decision for the first three years. As you become more experienced and prove that you are a safe driver, the cost will greatly decrease.
